Now there are very good systems you can buy that are not hard wired into your home but operate on radio waves. They are easy to install yourself and can be more reasonable on a monthly basis.

Also there are motion sensitive lights that detect movement in the area around your house and come on very brightly.

The best protection is probably to live in a gated community but these are rare and hard to find.
